Visualizing Trends for Children of Immigrants

Last updated on September 17, 2026, with new data from the 2024 American Community Survey.

A growing number of children in the United States are born to immigrant parents. Understanding the characteristics of these children and their families is critical when considering policies that affect all children and families.

This tool presents data and trends on children of immigrants and their parents, families, and households for states and the top 100 metropolitan areas. This information is available starting in 2006, the first year that American Community Survey data were available for detailed geographies.

Note: Because of data collection issues during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Census Bureau recommends against directly comparing 2020 American Community Survey data with other years and urges caution in interpreting the 2020 metro-area estimates.
